View Full Version : How To: headlight black out for P5!

well i dunno how many how to's of this there is but not on this site really, so i thought i'd try one out.
so you wanna black out your headlights? i did too. first you're gonna need some equipment. all you're gonna need is a 8mm socket, 10mm socket, screwdriver(flat and phillips), an oven, and some paint. i used this kinda paint
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/2770/july4th0618gj.th.jpg (http://img205.echo.cx/my.php?image=july4th0618gj.jpg).
it's Rustoleum hi temp flat black barbeque paint. make sure you get a high temp paint...you dont want those catching fire! dunno if it gets hot enough, but just to be safe.
ok so to get the headlights off you have to take off the bumper. it's pretty straightforward but there's some tricky parts. unbolt the mudguards on the bottom and the two 10mm bolts attaching it to the undercarriage. then get up under the fender well and unbolt the two 10mm bolts attaching it to the fenders. unscrew the screws along the top of the bumper grill area. now before you try to pull off the bumper make sure you push in the little tabs under the outer part of the headlight, you can push em down with a thin flathead screwdriver. it looks like this close up...
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/8340/july4th0702sa.jpg
and it's located right here on the headlight
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/9965/july4th0750jf.jpg
so the bumper should come right off after that. don't worry about taking all the fog light and turn light stuff off, you can just rest the bumper right in front of the car like so....
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/9858/july4th0779vg.jpg
so after that is off you can start unbolting the headlights. there are three 10mm bolts holding it to the frame. before you pull it off though take off the bumper support brackets from the bumper support beam. otherwise it'll be tough to get the lights out. that thing looks like this...
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/1563/july4th0761nv.jpg
make sure you unplug all the lights first! then the headlight should come right out!
ok next step, getting the light ready for the ez bake oven. the oven heats the urethane or whatever it is that holds the lens on, and makes it easy to take apart.
you dont need to take too much off just the rubber thing that goes around the low beam and that thing with the tab that holds the bumper on i mentioned earlier. also take out this little screw...
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/7973/july4th0696tz.jpg
that screw holds in that side of the lens, so easy to take it off while it's still cool.
ok it's ready!
get your oven to 200, shouldn't take long. get a cookie sheet and put a small towel on it, and put your headlight on that. then just plop it in the oven for 10 minutes
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/7521/july4th0661by.jpg
after the 10 minutes is up pull it out (wear gloves! mecanix or the home depot ones i have, cuz the light will be hot!) now to get the light apart just use some flathead screwdrivers and gently pry it loose from the tabs and apart from the housing. be patient here or you'll put some dents in the housing. so once that's completely off, you just have to unscrew the two screws holding the bezel onto the lens.
now comes the long part. sanding. i used a foam 150 grit pad to get the majority and then a scotch brite to get those fun little spots that are hard to get to.
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/3552/july4th0644bj.jpg
so once the lights are all nice and scuffed and smooth, make sure they are clean. then you paint them! i put a few coats. just make sure it's all coated and not to paint too fast or you'll make it run. and let the paint dry a little inbetween coats. then place em in the sun but out of wind for like 30 minutes or so if using the rustoleum
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/8828/july4th0609hm.jpg
so once they are dry enough to touch, put em back into the lens and screw em back on. then place them back on the bezel and push em as far as they'll go and put them back into the oven at 200degrees for like 5 minutes. take em out and push the lens all the way on. here's me pushing...
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/1307/july4th0673ut.jpg
make sure it's sealed all the way around like this!
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/7828/july4th0684cm.jpg
aint that pretty.
so after that you just put everything back on. dont forget that small screw that holds the edge of the lens on. and make sure you dont have spare parts and then take pictures to show everyone!
http://img205.echo.cx/img205/34/july4th0807xt.jpg
so all in all it took about a total of 4 hours or so cuz i had food halfway through. but i am very pleased with the results. hope you guys enjoy!
ps. i'm not responsible for anyone blowing up houses, cars, or any bad stuff like that. this is how i did it. you can copy me if you want.
somebody please move this to the How-To section. i need this in the future thanks!!!

Thanks for posting the how-to. The other one kept getting taken away for drama reasons un-known to me.
Be careful of the clip on the side of the headlight holding the bumper, i snapped one of mine when i did this.
what they should do is move it to the how-to section then lock it so no one does any of those dramatic stuff....Thanks for posting the how-to. The other one kept getting taken away for drama reasons un-known to me.

is this worthy of a how to sticky?
AbsoluteSwed
07-10-2005, 11:01 PM
i would say so
you DO NOT have to use high temp paint. the original sticky used a regular semi-gloss black and this is what ive found looks best. not too dull or glossy, but just right.

Good write up. A few suggestions; the old how-to had more pics of the bumper removal. Some peope might have problems with that. And secondly, you mentioned that you took off the metal clips after you heated up the light. I took mine off first, much easier when its still cold and you dont have to worry about messing up the hot plastic.

One more little thing. DO NOT hold the part you are painting by the little screw attachment!! That damn thing broke on me just now. Have some super glue handy if you break it. Easy fix. Easier to just not make my mistake.
Strata

alrighty, I got some 60 grit sand paper...would this be too rough to use or should I just go out and get some 150 grit like the write up recommends..also anyone have a how to with pics of taking off the bumper, im prolly going to do this next week but I dont wanna break the bumper tab things! if you got pics plz help
60 may be a little too rough. just go get some 180 grit. you dont even really need to sand it all that well. you just need some fine sandpaper to scuff up the chrome piece.

wow i just did this diy and followed xswimordiex's how-to step by step, and i have to say i love the outcome. if anybody's contemplatin on whether to do it or not, i say definitely do it. the only pita was takin off the front bumper, but once that's off it shouldnt be all that bad. theres a pic of it in my sig. just my two cents :)

wont this mod cause your front headlights to fog up and have some major condensation because your cracking the seal between the front and back housings of the light? correct me if im wrong b/c when i did autobody i know eveytime someone cracked their lense housing it would condensate....just wanna double check b/c this b4 i attempted...black on black would look hot

no, no problems w/ my lights. I did this mod years ago.
well you do reseal it when your done. after your done painting and you reassemble you throw it back into the oven to remelt the glue and push it together again. if you are still paranoid i heard some people use silicone to reaseal it.wont this mod cause your front headlights to fog up and have some major condensation because your cracking the seal between the front and back housings of the light? correct me if im wrong b/c when i did autobody i know eveytime someone cracked their lense housing it would condensate....just wanna double check b/c this b4 i attempted...black on black would look hot

The hardest part was trying to get the bumper off. I was looking for the mystery screws to drop the bumper. I was looking for them more towards the front of the car, but then I found them hiding in the fender at towards the top of it. I ended up breaking the secrete lock under the light though, but it went together and was unnoticable so if you break them, its not the end of the world. Great write up, I would have been stuck w\ chrome lights forever w\out it. I dont have the balls to venture out and do it myself. I needed the reassurance of directions

What's up, Thanks for the great write up on this....It looks freakin hot on the midnight blue....It took me a while to get the bumper off, but after that it was smooth...Sanding and painting took me a loooong time, but I'm a perfectionist and got the results I needed to be happy. 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint later and I'm satisfied...at 3:30 in the morning took them for a ride. The first day it rained I got freaked with a little vapor in the light near the turn signal, but it hasn't come back and it's rained buckets since then.

I still clean it up nice with some rubbing alcohol and then air dry.
You may want to primer it. I did.
Problem:
'Bama & it's humidity = sealing woes....my lights are starting to come apart.
Sub-problem:
After rain or car washing etc. I have to deal w/condensation.
Solution:
Take them back out and throw 'em back in the oven. Clamp 'em down & as an extra measure, use some water proof silicone seal.
Otherwise, when another P5 owner w/the stock chromies on sees the all black I catch them staring...or maybe it's because the wagon is just "different" overall...who knows...lol.

Quick question. Has anyone had problems with dust, etc. in the lights after doing this? I tried really hard to keep the clear cover clean and away from anything that would get it dirty but at night it looks like there is a lot of dust inside. Will this eventually fall to the bottom and go away or am I going to have to pull the whole thing apart again?

That's probably dust, & it's not going to go anywhere unless you take em back apart again....i know it sounds like a chore, but if you notice it, other ppl will notice it & that's a no-no right?
Next time do it where its not too dusty (I know it's hard....).
You should also use some POWDER FREE latex gloves....that will prevent oil from your hands/fingers from getting on there...and def prevent fingerprints.

Well I did this a little over a week ago and no fogging yet and it's rained quite a bit since then. Just a warning to people who are going to do this in the future: make sure you keep the clear housing in a clean place with little dust. I got some in there and it isn't fun taking the whole thing apart again. Also, for some reason on one light the screw holding the lens on was stripped badly; I was only able to get it out and in again once so there is still dust in one light but it isn't too bad. The link in my sig has some simple pictures for comparison.

Well I had each of mine in the oven at 300 degrees for ten minutes twice (for some reason it didn't work with 200 degrees) and it did absolutely nothing; no warping, bending whatever. The only thing that happened to me was that when prying the cover off I ended up bending some of the plastic around the edges. I was worried at first but it turned out to be completely harmless; no leaks and certainly no fogging. I mean, I didn't even use primer on mine; I just went to Walmart and got some 200-something grit sandpaper and some medium-temp semi-gloss black paint and that was it. I believe that to be a lot cheaper than to try to buy a headlight from some one here.
here are some pics of mine I did a few days ago.

I want to do this mod very soon, but was wondering if Automotive exterior paint would work? I have some left over from the body shop, and was thinking about thinning it way out and using an airbrush to do the headlights, giving it more of that C6 Corvette headlight fixture look. Until then, I'll just black them out like this...

I had painted my headlights at the ned of summer and have had no problems since. I didn't use high temp paint either. I have a blk protege so the headlights went blk to look like th 03 style. This would be a great mod if you have a white, blue, yellow etc.. to match the bezel to the color of your car instead of just painting it blk.

For anybody that HAS broken the bumper clip under the headlight, was it relatively cheap or easy to fix? By the way my bumper is drooping on the driver side, I can tell that the clip is either damaged or broken (from hitting a raccoon). It doesn't look so bad that I felt I had to fix it right away, but if I attempt this mod, nows the perfect time! Thanks!

I broke those clips, they didnt really do much I dont think. Check the 2 screws that screw into your fender and make sure those little tabs arent broken. My friend hit a dog and his bumper sat funny, I got some of that 2 part metal compound and built him new tabs since his were broken. Then i just filed them down so it would sit flush. Its been a few months and that stuff I used is holding up...

If you haven't had the bumper off before be very careful. There are clips on the sides of the headlights that hold the side part of the bumper up nice and tight to the fender and headlight, and they break very easily. The guide mentions that part if I recall correctly. I know it has been said but just take your time and be really careful not to strip the plastic screws that hold the splash guards and stuff in place.

Question ?.....Flat black or Semi - Gloss ? ?
Kansei
06-13-2006, 06:40 AM
If you want to match the OEM black headlights I think you'd want to use a satin finish? not a really high lustre gloss but not flat. semi-gloss might work, but I can't picture exactly what semi-gloss looks like.

Also painting the upper Grill lip and my calipers and anything else that gets in my way...lol
I'm gonna C if I take a full day and do it all...
Thanks!

if they are blacked out does the light still project as well?
to me it seems like the chrome finish helps make the light work
I'm talking a safety issue here
Is it legal in canada?
Sorry for the silly questions, but I really want to do this and am unsure
You won't be painting the reflector, so no worries there. I'll post a shot of the real deal a little later for ref. ...

Hell yeah it's legal in Canada.. the later Protege5s in Canada were sold with the black headlight housing.

Finally got around to doing this How-To this weekend simultaneously with my roomate and his G35. I don't post much but i figured I'd share with anyone interested in blackin out their lights. It went smoothly. Our cars are 10x easier to work on then a G35 though. Take a look. The car is in bad shape since i live and park in the streets in NYC (with is frustrating as all hell by the way) but I'm keepin it as pretty as possible.
BTW, great mod to do-- the look is awesome (although i might remove my yellow fog rockblockers now, feedback on that would be much appreciated) and it even makes my headlights perform a little bit better at night.
I contacted CorkSport and they said that they no longer sell them, referred me to their seller (alfaotto.com). Contact at AlfaOtto said that they are only a supplier and do not sell to the general public, and if they do, there is a $800 minimum.
Any AVs interested in taking this up?

Have you tried eBay yet? look around in the for sale forum and maybe ask in the 3rd gen forum. I know a lot of people have them, and there's people around who are probably trading their cars in and would sell them to you.

not so much.. as you can see from my sig pic, we are blacking out the decorative chrome piece in the headlights, which is totally separate from the reflectors that actually do stuff with the light.
If anyone has noticed any decrease in light output it is because you have reduced the light scatter caused by the chrome housings, but I'm willing to bet light on the road is still the same.

you must be right since so many people that have blacked out headlights never mentioned about this issue... by the way, how did you get that blue tint? you have a diy write up for it???

Actually you don't have to do anything for that except buy new bulbs. They don't light up blue, they still light up a nice legal orange color. They only look that way when off (and when a camera flash is on them.. normally they just look clear-ish).
Sylvania Silverstar turn signal bulbs... a big ripoff at 20 dollars (they just paint the normal orange bulbs (a couple dollars) with a shiny silvery-blue coating) but they do the trick :)

chris (kansei) is right in that there is no diminished light output if you black out the housing - as long as you don't touch the inner reflective portions. all 03 Proteges - MSP, P5 and regular Pros - had black housing headlights; if there was ANY issue with light output, Transport Canada would have deemed it illegal. i switched from the chrome housing (mine's an 02) to the black housing headlights - yay for free trades!! :D - with another local P5 owner (he had an 03) and i noticed no difference.

No worries about the reflectors. After you bake the light and remove the lens you then remove the reflectors from the housing prior to sanding and painting.

Can't take pics 'cause I am at work and I also can't see the pics on the first page but I can try and explain.
3 bolts on fender well
3 or 4 screws on underside of each fender (start at the wheel and work your way to the foglight)
2 bolts on the underside of the middle of the bumper
Now for the tricky ones
2 screws on each side of the fender inside the well area. The first one is just inside the fender well and the second is in the area where the fender meets the headlight housing.
Just be careful with those clips on the headlight, they are easy to break. Take a small screwdriver and depress them while pulling the bumper down.
I know pics are more helpful but hope this helps you out somehow.

No, you will have to remove the grill first. Sorry, thought you had done this already. Grill is simple - two bolts, then pull out the plastic screws (using a flathead) then pull up at an angle.

okie. then are there screws under the grill? i got the two connecting the bumper to the undercarraige as well

Remove all the fender lining 2 screws behind the headlights and 2 underneath that I remember. Be careful you don't break the little taps off the bumper under the headlights. Putting it back on is much easier with an extra set of hands!!

i got the 2 screw off the grill and the two plastic plugs, but there are still 2 lil arrow looking things holding it on....how do i remove those? it doesnt look like they wil make it through the holes, they are flared on the end

No screws under the grill. Just remove the others I mentioned and set the bumper to the side....don't forget the wiring for the fogs unless you disconnected them.
Once the bumper is off you will see the three bolts holding the lights on. But before removing the lights, remove the black plastics pieces (two bolts) at the bottom of the light. It is much easier to remove the lights with these out of your way.

If the bumper is off and you didn't hear any 'breaking sounds' then no need to worry about the clips. They were either broken (as one of mine was) or popped out when you loosened the screws.

Good News: Everything is back on my car that I took off
Bad News: Lights aren't painted b/c i couldnt get the plastic off even after heating 3 times in oven. i got it pryed a lil but wouldnt come off and i have somewhere to be at 630 so i had to put everything back on. hopefully i can try again next week :(
Other good news: so i didnt completely waste my day, i moved my ballasts so they arent in the engine bay anymore. also all the nuts and screws are gone, so everything i took off found it's way back on.

Did this Mod yesterday.
Changed a few things here and there, improvised a bit, but it all went quite smoothly.
We didn't sand at all. Also didn't use Hi-Temp paint. Might seem like a bad idea, but my friend that helped me did this to his Volkswagen VR6 over a year, and hasn't has any issues. But yeah.... it looks great.

We did 200, but definitely not for very long... We had it in there for 1-3 minutes, tops.
When you're prying it apart, it helps to have a utility knife handy to cut away at the silicon.

I use 200 degrees for 6-8 min, I also baked the painted piece seperate to make sure paint was dry. The silcone is way overkill and not needed, unless you pulled all the glue of yours they'll seal perfect, I dont think anyones ever had leaks that stuck them back together tight.

First off, I want to thank you for a glorious write-up! Made life so easy this past weekend. I did wind up breaking the bumper tabs at the headlights though. And, somehow wound up with 2 extra 10mm bolts. Eitherway, Here's the results

I actually went to pickup a Black Mica 03 with all the little things mine doesn't have... tweeter pods, side markers, moon roof etc. But it was gone by the time I went to take a look at it.... so I gave that all up and got this one. It seems I've had her forever.... don't regret it.... yet.
I've been wanting to get rid of the rack for some time now.... but I havn't seen anyone intrested in it.

I'm going "platinum"....lol
Naa, just black...just gonna try something else, plus I won't have my front bumper side markers by this summer so I need to work something out like the sedan's lights.
When I went to insepct my car this year they gave me a hard time about it, since I painted them. But if the Headlight corner has some type of reflector I should be o.k.
Don't know if this is a NY State thing...but it actually made sence to me..."safety"

maybe you need to find a new inspection station - i have a sedan with p5 headlights, no corner marker, and passed state inspection - they didn't even mention anything about the lights, let alone the header i also have.

you could also get the instructions from xenon.com under the DDE KIT. Actually easier if u search the forums for the xenon dde kit installation .PDF file. Thats the instructions i used. ok i just did this, and i found a helpful hint for everybody who hasnt done it yet,
when u take it out of the oven and ur trying to pry it apart; it cools down fast so use a hairdryer or a heatgun, because i used it and the silicon or w/e they used to seal it together just literally spread apart with out any effort at all, really easy with a hairdryer, REALLLLLY EASY
and my headlights looked a little sandblasted so i sanded them down with 1200 grit sand paper and cleared them, looks better then originally but not as good as it did the first day i bought it
