i just got a response from place i want momo shift knob for my automatic cx. they said all their knobs are universal and will fit anything that has a 0.60" shift rod or less...they said they don't use car specific guides.
- anyone know what size the CX shift rod is...?

Yeah that's because the momo knobs are really, really poor quality and just use ill-fitting set screws to hold them in place. They'll work even if the rod isn't threaded.

i've had momo knobs on 2 other cars and i liked them. i mean, especially w/ and auto, the knob really isn't even used much at all, and to me is mostly for looks. does anyone know what the size is on the CX of the shift rod, less than 0.60"? i'll have to look at it in morning.

I would imagine quite a bit less than that. Half an inch is pretty beefy. I know my shifter is only 10mm. If memory serves me the shifter on the automatic Protege5 is 8mm and it looks like the shifter on the CX-7. But yeah, measure it up before you but anything.

Has anyone tried replacing the stock shift knob on the CX-7 yet? Just curious if one from a manual will fit! Any experiences or insights would be helpful.
Thanks!

As long as the threads are the same, you can put anything you like as a shift knob. Havent tried myself, but if the gearbox is based of a 6, I cant really imagine they would change the threads on the stick... doesnt seem logical to me... but who knows...

might want to check it out first at the dealer/parts dept. I just moved up from a Mazda 3 and I'm not completely positive, but I think that the thread size on my automatic (which is the same as our CX-7) was different from that of the manual Mz3.

I created this post about the shift knob I installed: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123657295
The CX-7 is my 10th Mazda and all the previous ones were able to share shift knobs. I took a knob from my Miata, installed it in my RX-8, then my Mazda3, and then in my MazdaSpeed Miata. Unfortunately, the CX-7 does not accept the same knob. I've been using products from RSpeed here in GA for some time, so I visited them for a knob and tried many differents ones with no luck.
Luckily the shift knobs that they carry from Sola use a custom fit Delrin insert. So we found an insert that had not been tapped and then properly sized it for the CX-7. It now fits great and very snuggly. Its funny how such a small change can make the feel of driving the CX-7 much sportier. I still miss my little sports cars though! Anyone wanna buy a slightly used CX-7? (shady) Anyone, anyone?

Some shift knobs "MoMo" do not require threads. They have allen screws along the base of the knob that lock it into place. So the correct thread size/type is not always a requirement.

From a dealer-modded automatic Rav4.. A little off topic, but thought I'd share. Any comments?

I do like the carbon fiber but it's to rice for me in my CX-7. But I'd love it in my '99 miata! :)
And better pictures..

The Mazda AT shifter is on a M8 x P1.25 thread.
After some Googling I discovered that Toyota/Lexus/Scion use the same thread, and I swapped my Mazda5 and Sienna knobs without problems.
Ebay has lots of nice Lexus knobs, of course. Also, anyone interested in selling me a slightly used CX-7 knob for cheap?

It's either an M10 x 1.25 thread size like all Mazda manual shifters, or more likely an M8 x 1.25 like most of the automatic shifters we're seeing now (Toyota, Scion, Mazda 3).
If any of TWM's stainless shift knobs (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/) are of interest to you, I'd be happy to send you both the M10 x 1.25 and M8 x 1.25 threaded inserts to be sure it will fit correctly.
Let me know if you're interested, feel free to give me a call toll free at 1-877-655-0540 or PM me.
Thanks,
Kevin
