Door Edge protection Advise

Hello All,

I've been looking for a door edge protector. I was looking at this site ( http://www.carbumper.com/products.html ). They have some good products. I was thinking of getting something like "Set of 4 - Clear Door Guards (EW-5)", but then thinking if it might change color in sunlight, so might as well get black.... What do you guys think.. have you seen anything better out there?.

Try to find oem door edge guards because they fit better and look good too, i got mine on ebay for half price than if you would buy from the dealer and they were the same color as my mazda5 (took about 30mins to install). Just kept looking on ebay till you find a set for your ride. good luck(cheers)

I ordered some black ones. Similar to the ones shown here - I got a 10' strip from customautotrim.com. I don't think the short straight ones will align correctly on the back doors. Hopefully I can bend and trim the long strip correctly.

P.S. My FIVE YEAR OLD already put a tiny ding in my Cadillac in the garage with the CX-9 back door. Ugh. I need those strips NOW. :-)

Yes, I have this stuff on two other cars (Mazda3 and BMW M3). I decided not to do this for the CX-9. While it has worked on the other cars (i.e. absorbs a stone impact with no or little damage to the original paintwork underneath), it is also hard to cover your entire car with this, so there are unprotected area on both cars that got chips anyways. CX-9 is supposed to be more of a working car for me, rather than a pretty one. Also, bumper is plastic anyways, the lower door panels are already protected by plastic, and the hood is fairly high (i.e. reduces the probability of a stone hitting the metal part of the hood).

Anyways, if you don't care about the cost, you won't regret doing this. It does, mostly, work.

Correct. There is nothing OEM available for door edge protection for the CX-9. In fact there isn't much aftermarket available for the CX-9 either.

It is a 8mm thick 3M strip that looks like attached image after it is installed. Cost me $40 for all 4 doors.

I had it installed on my wifes CX-9. So far it is great. I agree with the person that said you can't cover your whole car, but it is intended for the higher impact areas of road debris; hood, front bumper, side view mirrors. This is the first time I had it installed on a car. I looked at it for years and feel it will be a worthwile investment.

The cost for the hood, front bumper, side views and partial fenders was around $750. I figured it would be similar to the cost of repainting the hood and front bumper after years of road debris damage. Plus I don't have to worry about looking at massive amounts of paint chips and a repainted area of the car is never the same.
