ok so so the install took 2 days. and around 15 hours of work, we took it slow and we made sure everything was alright, please if you don't have a lot of time and a spare car to get some parts from a pep boys or some other auto store please do not do this. you must also have a lot of tools including that 14mm adjustable racheting wrench, it saved our lives.

ok so here it goes:

here is our test subject (my car :) )
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/car.JPG

take the intercooler off, just unbolt the nuts and unscrew the clamps

http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2002.JPG

then take the battery off with a 10mm wrench and then remove the tray underneath.

here is mike and kurfgator taking off the heatshelds and the stock inlet pipe.

remove that little harness on the bottom left and remove the rest of the heatshields.

thats me working on removing the exhaust manifold. REMOVE THE HOOD!!!!!! it'll save you a lot of time!
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2009.JPG

lots of pb blaster and the manifold to turbo studs removed.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2010.JPG

some crazy ways we found to remove the exhaust manifold nuts, they are very very very very tight.

oil line, bottom and top, coolant line on the right of the pic. by the way you will loose coolant. not much oil.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2015.JPG

pics of kurfgator garage, incredible by the way, any tool imaginable.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2016.JPG
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2017.JPG

modify the oil return line because the bolts that fit the turbo are thicker.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2018.JPG

install the exhaust manifold again. this is very tricky and very hard. install the turbo studs after you have inserted the exhaust manifold and all the studs are in, you dont have to put the nuts because there has to be some play for the alignment between the manifold and the turbo but make sure all the studs are inserted in the manifold.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2019.JPG

install the inlet pipe and the stock air box. kurfgator modified my aem intake and made it a short ram, which i liked and he also modified the heatshield because it will not fit properly since the intake side of the turbo is bigger.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2020.JPG

buit9110

kurfgator had to make a custom intercooler hose because the one i recieved was too short, he also put the quick tap there for the EBC.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2021.JPG

install the intercooler back along with the battery, which by the way, the battery tray will only allow one bolt to be tightened since the inlet pipe is thicker and will get in the way along with some wiring harnesses.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/buit9110/turbo%20upgrade/gt3071%2022.JPG

finally install the hood back up and make sure that all of your clamps, nut and so on and so forth are properly tightened.
here is a pic of us three, from left to right:

Lol, good memories man. A lot of good advice, especially the part about having another free car to make 2am trips to auto-zone, lol.

My windsheild was also my tool box, its just so easy to leave things there, but a pain to find them later. Standing on the motor with a breaker bar was fun, too. Glad ya'll got it all together and working properly. How much time did it take?

Yes, Subscribing to the thread to see future developments and discussion.

P.S.: What you did is learn more in a weekend than you would have in a month of shop class. Awesome.

Keep a close eye for leaks and items that magically loosen themselves. It's normal for the first week that all the bugs show up, fix them as they arise and everything should be fine.

That was one hell of a project!! Good times, good times.

BTW, for any of you wondering what the hell I am doing when I was standing on top of the motor, that was how we got to that PITA manifold bolt that is pretty much hidden by the runners. You put a 14 racheting, flex head wrench (got it at Lowe's) on the bolt and then I hook the end of the tie strap around that and put the breaker bar through the other end of the strap. buit held the wrench on the bolt while I dead lifted the bar. It worked like a charm!

I looks awesome. I really need to get mine on.

On the turbo outlet to the intercooler, how far over does the outlet shift to the drivers side? Is that why you need a longer hose?

no, the intercooler still sits where is supposed to be, the stock hose was short, and the upgraded hose from protegegarage was even shorter. what they should of done was to give us the 45 degree hose with long legs and we cut it to our liking.

Heh, I'm asking about the TURBO OUTLET. Is it still straight below the intercooler inlet?

Heh, I'm asking about the TURBO OUTLET. Is it still straight below the intercooler inlet?

It is in pretty much the exact same place (not saying exactly because I'm sure it moved a little bit). The problem is the stock K04 has a long turbo outlet and the GT doesn't so the turbo outlet sits a lot lower. If you want a visual you would need a stock size hose with one of the legs about 3" longer. Also, you'll need to figure out what you want to do for boost control. The one thing I would suggest to anyone installing this turbo is to take the compressor housing off (easy to do, don't freak out) and have the housing drilled and tapped for a 1/4" nipple. You will need it added no matter what type of boost control method you want to use and you should get it done ahead of time. If you have any other questions about install suggestions just post em up here or PM me.

It's been a while, but I could have sworn that thing was closer to the passenger side by a little bit?

This is why I remembe when people where gettign the ATP inlet pipe for the K04, I said I thought it would be a tighter fight due to the K04 being out further.

I think if it did move it was only a fraction of an inch. To make a hose that fit I had to add a little length to just one end of the stock hose.

so are you still runnin the stock manifold with the bigger turbo???

yea i think most if not all of us with turbo upgrades are running the stock manifold. I like it also because it has the flex piece so its easier to align the turbo onto it

so the stock manifold has no problems bolting up to the bigger turbo???

the problems we had was with the bolts that hold it to the block!

the problems we had was with the bolts that hold it to the block!

thats wierd, i did let mine soak in some wd40 before doing my install. But did you bolt the manifold to the block first and then to the turbo or the other way around. I think its easier if you let the turbo sit unbolted under the manifold while u bolt the manifold to the block and then the turbo to the manifold.

We Tried So Many Different Ways I Dont Remember How We Got It Right!

forrestang
08-30-2007, 02:26 PM
I found it easiest to.....

Well first I always tap the bolt holes again as they seem to get rust covered and a bitch to get the turbo to line up.

But I drop the turbo in and hook up lines. Then thread the manifold on the block very loosely. Bolt turbo to the manifold, then tighten all the manifold nuts up.

ok im thinking of going with the Dnp manifold for this turbo upgrade.. i know the stock one has that flex pipe but the stock one is also a bitch to get out.. i figured if i bought the other manifold i could cut the stock one and make it easier to get at the bolts that are on the block without climbing on the motor.??

just a thought of course.

yes bro the car its going for single digits 1/4 miles times! i am finding how to put a regular 2.3 engine in there and fully build it to the max. hoping for 700 whp but that will be like a hihg 10's pass. cont know how to pushe the car over the 1000hp mark.
maybe a 2jz?

LOL JK about the 2js~

jbspeed6
12-05-2007, 08:26 PM
2.3L Evo's are hitting the 1000whp mark, so there is not reason we can't too. It would take a new block but we would still have 1 more injector if you install port injection.

You should go for it, Mike :D.

yea we would need a cast iron block or some sleeves to do it but it doesnt look like sleeves would be easy on this motor if you take a close look.
