Last week I noticed a new noise in the car, a very light whistling or whining sound. To me it sounded like it was coming from the drivers side, somewhere behind the console.
The easiest way to reproduce it was to turn the ignition to one step before starting (idiot lights come on, you could turn on the radio). While driving its much harder to hear.
Mazda ordered a new ambient temp sensor for the car under warranty, the mechanic saying it was a new issue he'd never seen before (fwiw).

Other than the noise it was making, it did not seem to effect anything (perhaps it would in time, did not think to ask).

There is a little fan in there so it can sample the air. Probably had a bad bearing.

On the lower part of the dash next to the ignition key. You can see a little grill.
