So I am driving around this weekend and I hear a soft clunk when shifting from 3rd to 4th. I slowed down and downshifted back to 3rd and again heard a small clunk. Is this common? Mind you its not grinding and I never had this before.

Mine does it also. It sorta soft of a sound but it's pronounced. Doesn't grind, but it makes some kind of sound.

Mine does the same. I've always thought it was because I was either stepping on the gas too soon or not releasing the clutch in time.

I don't have an issue with the 4-3rd downshift but my 5 to 4th downshift sounds horrible. I'm going to remove all my mods next friday and take it in saturday for the dealer to fix it.

some people have said that the tranny mount bolt was loose on their car, and tightening it solved the problem. tho if you guys are having issues with a specific gear change and not hearing it all the time, its likely to be internal. wouldnt hurt to check the mount bolt either way.

I have the 3rd to 4th clunk, but only when I shift quickly. If deliberately shift slow/normal, it does not clunk... Synchro issue?

I get clunks and grinding at the shifter (clutch fully pressed, no gas). 2-3 and 4-5 are particularly bad. Any howtos on tightening that bolt?

Same here. I don't think it's a synchro issue. It shifts, so no biggie. No need to make a problem out of nothing.

OK guys, i have been having a shifting problem, from 4th to 5th, its more noticeable when i am cruising slowly and short shifting ( 2 to 3000 rpm), i have to really force the shifter over, i thought originally it was because i had put on the cobbsport light shifter weight, since gone back to factory and the same problem, next i will be putting the factory gearbox oil back in, i am running royal purple right now?. Anyone else experienced anything like this?, oh and for you guys thinking you havea syncro's in 4th and 5th, you dont, its only 1st 2nd and possibly 3rd!

Corksport MM inserts, TWM shifter bushings, and Redline MT-90 have cured my shifter problems!

My car also does this a very soft, barely audible sound, when the gearchange "clicks" in. I'm also torn between it being a "normal" sound and me screwing up the gearchange ever so slightly.

Hmm, i am going to get it checked by one of the mazda techs i know, i already have the ********** engine mount, the twm short throw shifter and bushings and this was everything i thought i would need to improve the shift, fitting the cobbsport lightweight shifter weight only made me lose shift feel, its a real shame the speed has such a crappy shifter, sometimes when shifting fast it just wont hook 3rd.

I have a sound similar to this. I originally thought that it was a clutch/shifting issue also but then after some testing found that I could reproduce the sound by blipping the throttle at times. I'm having the dealer take a look at it tomorrow but I was curious if anyone else can get it to happen with throttle blips. Also it seems more previlent in colder temps (maybe I'm just imagining this part though).
