2 1/4" will be fine.
If you REALLY plan on going turbo soon you should go ahead with 2.5" or larger though.

i have 2.5" cat-back and a magnaflow exhaust, and it sounds like a mustang gt, all deep and throaty not all ricey

magnaflow and dynomax is a good choice if you want to keep a low tone exhaust.
Be sure to have a resonator

davo, with your 1.6L, 2.25" is more than enough. no matter what exhaust you get, if it's straight through it will sound tinny. definately get a good resonator to keep the buzzing sound to a minimum
and yeah, if you're planning on turbo down the track and you really want to do exhaust now, just get a high flow cat and back in 2.5". once again besure to get a resonator. that way you wont have to throw away the exhaust when you go turbo. 2.5" will be plenty big enough for a low boost 1.6L engine
Ok here is my plan to get magic tune exhaust in perth to fit a 2.5" exhaust for the resenator under the drivers seat back. When the turbo comes alone just get the front end replaced.
Sound like a plan??

yeah i just got me self a 2inch cat back big enough to open up a bit, small enough to not give me the shits on the freeway (everyday for 60km) and a lukey muffler
waiting for a bit more cash for the headers... liverpool exhaust have one for our cars they are the distributers for (damn i forgot the name oh well)
but yeah if you want a turbo get a turbo muffler as well apparantly has much less restrictions...
and yeah just get a cat back, or get a new cat, and cat back, that way you are just waiting for the new downpipe

yep sounds like a good idea to me davo. that way you're not wasting your money on something you wont use when you go turbo. might be a good idea to get the resonator changed to 2.5" at that time. just make sure that you get the exhaust people to have the pipe completely 2.5". then have a converter of about 5-10cm that converts the stock pipe to 2.5". also might be a good idea to get mandrel bent piping if you can afford it.
