hey guys (and girl)...
so what are some thoughts on future group buys? It doesnt necessarily have to be a minimum of 5 ppl because the biggest saving us aussies will be on shipping. so even just two people getting something will save. or even just a few people getting several products from 1 company etc...
so, I know a short shifter and bushings combo like TWM 2nd series shifter and Kartboy bushings is at the moment quite likely....but what else are we wanting???
AWR header?
AWR engine mounts?
a bored out throttle body?
JIC suspension?
just a few ideas...

How about some Eibach Pro Springs?
Critter
12-25-2003, 03:01 PM
There is now a Pacemaker header for SP20s which is similar to the AWR, but not stainless.
Is "off-road" like the AWR insofar as has no pre-cat.....my local guy won't supply it as it won't pass emissions, I expect this would be the same with the AWR jobbie......
For mine, since I got NOWHERE with Jeff with pads and SS lines (freight price), that would be my pick!
twilightprotege
12-25-2003, 07:34 PM
yeah SS clutch and brake lines sounds good to me :)
any other input???
twilightprotege
12-25-2003, 07:37 PM
oh and that's really strange critter because just as long as 1 cat is in there, the car should pass a sniffer test, but not a visual. it's illegal to tamper with emissions stuff i believe
Critter
12-26-2003, 03:09 AM
*bends topic a bit, again*
Well yep, my mail is coz it's the first (pre) cat which needs engine block heat.....
Really busting my bit over the header thing, the Pacemaker is said to be good for 9kw/13Nm at the treads I believe. An Adelaide AstinaGT member was the guinea pig car.
Can't see a boy in blue looking for 2 cats,.If I knew it would pass a sniffer with one cat, I'd go that way. HAS to be a good idea.
Much cheaper than an AWR import too.....

12-26-2003, 05:19 AM
well andrew i have volunteered you, to astinagt.com
i am in desperate need for some kind of short shifter, and since i finally received a trolley jack and stands (i've been using a long hydraulic and bricks) install should be easy
the short shifters for us are the same across the range
critter, just go to someone else... carline will do them
twilightprotege
12-26-2003, 05:48 AM
james - tell the SP20 guys on astinagt.com to come over here and we'll get a GB going. i think the short shifter will be a next popular choice...
maybe even along side SS clutch and brake lines???
ok, let's do a head count.
who would be in for a short shifter/bushing GB?
who would be in for a SS clutch and brake line GB?
i'd be in both. regular astinagt.com guys let everyone there know about this thread....i mightnt have a chance to get on there to say check this thread out...

1 x short shifter and bushings
twilightprotege
12-28-2003, 03:45 AM
well it looks like we better start getting a list for the TWM 2nd series shifter with kartboy urethane bushings. i think there are 6 or even more who want the shifter combo on the astinagt forum.
i'll start emailing around places in america/canada that sell both of them and see what sort of deal we can get. might take a week or two due to xmas holidays etc...

I'd be interested in costs of SS braided lines if they were ADR compliant.
Actually I'd be interested in what the costs are even if they weren't ADR compliant as a comparison.
Race Brakes in Melbourne quoted me $550 fitted with racing fluid for the brake lines alone! That was a custom fitting as there doesn't seem to be any available off the shelf domestically.
twilightprotege
01-06-2004, 04:59 AM
yeah the SS lines appear they will be the next GB. they wont be adr compliant....but i have no idea how the hell the whole adr thing works. either way, i'll be getting them. they'd prob work out to be around $150-200aud which would include the clutch line if you want that.
SFC01v2
01-06-2004, 06:26 AM
Makes a fair difference from the $550. You can lock me in as keen as mustard...

sweet. i know critter would be a certain as well.
ahb11m
01-06-2004, 07:15 AM
hmmm would this sorta thing be compatable with me
if it is i am interested... just space the GB out ... that way more people can keep on with it and stuff
twilightprotege
01-06-2004, 07:23 AM
well i know myself, i wont be able to do another gb until end of feb. i've got the shifter combo now, dyno tuning for my car when the cam gears get here (i'm hoping tomorrow), wedding stuff to pay for (getting married end of april), car rego due end of this month. dang.
twilightprotege
01-06-2004, 07:24 AM
oh and compatable with your car? probably are, but i will check
ahb11m
01-06-2004, 07:30 AM
haha, yeah my gf has decided we arn't getting married, coz i'm gonna marry a mazda first!!
damn if only i could modify her, like i do the car.... j/k but i do wish she hadn't bought a laser, and then claimed it was the same car ...
come on cam gears for andrew.... !! you'll have a bloody rocket ship with them!!! the fastest n/a car does have a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
twilightprotege
01-06-2004, 07:35 AM
yeah i'm getting used to the title fastest na sp20/p5
twilightprotege
01-11-2004, 06:52 PM
ok, let's talk about the next GB. this wont be until early march because i dont think everyone can afford it until then. but how stainless steel brake line and clutch line(optional) combo?? or slotted rotors and pads combo?
ahb11m
01-11-2004, 07:05 PM
haha, how about 4 wheel disc brakes??
i'm keen for the ss lines, just not 100% how cash flow will be even then... we'll find out closer to the day
twilightprotege
01-11-2004, 07:33 PM
well you could get just front slotted rotors...
ahb11m
01-11-2004, 07:49 PM
yeah, but i'd prefer a challenge.... but then again, i like doing things and then get distracted... it took me about 3 days to install my stereo... i start it and then pick up other stuff
twilightprotege
01-11-2004, 08:15 PM
hehehe....my car has been without a stereo for 2 weeks now ;) putting in a low grade amp and new wiring. just waiting for the david navone high-low line converter and will be getting good RCA leads sometime this week hopefully
Critter
01-11-2004, 09:37 PM
For me it is BRAKES.....
SS lines, yes, the Goodridge ones for bikes are certainly ADR compliant......whatever.
But slotted rotors and pads would be good, even if front only. At nearly 60k's, my pads will need changing before too long.
twilightprotege
01-11-2004, 09:45 PM
yeah i've just gone over 50k so new pads will be not far away for me either...and now since my car is going to be wifey's and future lil twilight's car i want it to be as safe as possible.
either way we have a few interested in atleast SS lines and possibly rotors so we'll see how we're travelling in a month or two
ahb11m
01-12-2004, 01:11 AM
andy... lil twilight is scaring me at the moment.... i'm scared we'll lose you!!!!
anyway.... what ya gotta do is drive on the freeway.... my brake pads havn't been changed for nearly 90,000km!!!
beat that!!
twilightprotege
01-12-2004, 01:19 AM
nah i'll always be a car nut....dont worry about that! a lil twilight will just stop me being stupid when he/she is in the car with me

SFC01v2
01-12-2004, 04:35 AM
Never mind driving on the freeways, the factory pads appeared to be made out of compressed diamond dust. They just didn't wear!
Actually that is a stupid comment because I didn't give them a chance swapping them and the rotors out at 10,000km's.
Still the factory tyres are at fault - they are the most engaging tyres to brake with that I have ever experienced! You can go virtually immediately to limit braking on sound alone. Now that is just asking for abuse, isn't it?
I'm still keen as mustard for the SS lines...

Next G/B what about this Big brake kit $730USD $950AUD http://www.e-racer.com/prod05.htm have a look.
ps my wife is going back to work after 16 months off (more mods) (dance)

twilightprotege
01-12-2004, 07:50 AM
arhhhh...more mods hey rat!!! SWEEEEETTTT!!!! :D
sfc - yeah the stock tyres suck. i assume you have the yoko advans? i've still got more than acceptable tread left on the tyres...and here's a story :
was driving from the gold coast home a few weekends ago, was raining pretty heavily, but wasnt hard. it was enough to see about 300m ahead of you. anyway, driving at 110kph it was, well it felt, safe. i came up to a car and thought it was time to overtake it. so i floored it (in 5th mind you). the engine just revved out to redline. FARK!!!!! i was aquaplaning!!!! i had absolutely not control!!!!i slowed down to 100kph and i was fine. certainly a moment that's for sure!!!
SFC01v2
01-13-2004, 02:30 AM
Actually I wasn't bagging the factory tyres. I think that they aren't bad. Now before you think me retarded or something - they are Toyo Tranpath R23's. Not an SP20 remember, so they are on 15"'s.
Can't say that they are doing to well in terms of longevity though. I might make it to 25,000kms on them. But that might be wishful thinking with the way that I drive.
Good to see that there is some progress with the cam gears!
twilightprotege
01-13-2004, 02:38 AM
i knew that ;) LOL
hey i was just having a look on the dba website - how much were the rotors if you dont mind me asking?
Tunnel_Rat
01-13-2004, 03:09 AM
Andy last time i spoke to DBA they do not do a disc for the sp20 only for the standard four bolt pattern:'(

poop.
well good thing i'm looking at powerslot from america at the moment....GB????
SFC01v2
01-13-2004, 03:32 AM
I'm tipping that if you got enough of a group buy together you could get slotted blanks from DBA drilled to the 5 bolt pattern.
If you talk to Trevor Sullivan at Brake Distributors of Australia (http://www.brakedistributors.com.au/contact.html) you should find him more than helpful. I paid AUD$125 per rotor when I got my DBA537's.
DBA537 slotted rotors can be bought for about AUD$117 each from http://www.autospeed.com/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?ecomsvr=&category=897&product=1003801529 as a guide.
Hope that helps some, especially if your able to support Australian industry. (2thumbs)

01-13-2004, 03:36 AM
this is actually what i'm thinking at the moment : http://www.rr-racing.com/bigbrakes.htm
the 12" conversion - keeps the stock caliper, just a larger disc. waddia think?
SFC01v2
01-13-2004, 03:57 AM
Well you will get something a little more than 20% increased braking torque at the front wheel so that claim is valid. The downside is that at lockup there is more reserve on the rear brakes, so it could be argued that it is a step back from 'optimum' retardation. It is a bit complicated to predict what effect they would have on peak retardation.
Fade resistance should increase with additional mass in the rotor (how much mass though)?
The increased unsprung mass will have a negative effect on road holding (whether or not it will be noticeable I couldn't comment on)
I don't see from the pictures how float between the rotor and the hat is achieved. Usually the fixing bolts are mounted in slots - but the pictures available don't obviously show this.
From memory I think that the DBA5000 series 2 piece rotors for WRX go for about AUD$300 per wheel as a comparison.
Do they supply new rotors only? At what cost?
They certainly look cool, but I still hold my reservations on the durability of cross drilled rotors. Despite what anyone says to the contrary!
Personally if I could get DBA rotors drilled to match your hubs at about 20% [edit... oops should be 30-40%, forgot about the other wheel!!] of the price I know what I would do. Besides what do current SP20 drivers replace worn rotors with? OE? Surely DBA would have a market if they provided an alternate drilling on DBA537? That said I am assuming that the dimensions of the rotors between 1.8 and 2.0L versions are unchanged - just the bolting pattern.
twilightprotege
01-13-2004, 04:07 AM
yeah they look pretty sweet to me. definately on the purchasing block.
floating the hat - have a look at www.apracing.com - it explains it well. it's the best way to go in relation to brake rotor design (imo)
what they supply is new rotors and a bracket to move the stock caliper out by the required amount.
but dont worry - i'd get the slotted rotors as they are an option
as far as i was aware the only diff between 1.8 brakes and 2.0 is 5 lugs instead of 4
SFC01v2
01-13-2004, 04:11 AM
From the images at rr-racing can you see how they float the hat? I can't - it just looks like they are bolted straight up there.
I guess for individuality in the Australian environment they would hold some cache - but for street USE I question whether the extra cost could be used somewhere more fulfilling LIKE AN EXHAUST!!!
Critter
01-13-2004, 05:21 AM
I would prefer a slotted rotor rather than a cross-drilled one.
I spoke with Specialised Brake and Clutch and went round and round in circles.
They reckon the DBA rotors are pad-killers and there aren't any rotors suitable anyway. Dunno.....
Race brakes reckon the go is Corvette C5 front rotors/calipers and pads which fit up OK but takes about a week to do....for $1700.
Same brakes as an HSV Premium front end. Orta stop an Astina pretty good tho'.....
twilightprotege
01-13-2004, 05:24 AM
i think i'll go for the rr-racing setup. looks pretty good to me.
and yes, exhaust is on the way - see a new thread shortly :)
Tunnel_Rat
01-13-2004, 08:55 AM
Andy i like the rr setup but $753AUD+shipping for two disc seems a little expensive
twilightprotege
01-13-2004, 04:35 PM
that's what you pay for upsized rotors unfortunately :(
