i've come to the realization that i need/want a boost gauge. although i quite like pillar mountings, i dont want to drill a hole in my pillar, or pay the money for a full pillar replacement. where can i mount a boost gauge that doesnt require drilling/overall-tearing-up of my interior?

Yea I think the steering column pod is your best bet if you dont want to get a pillar!

I've procured another instrument surround (that black piece around the stock gauges) and want to "submerge" my boost gauge in the lower left corner. That way it won't block the idiot lights and will still be visible without looking away - IFF there's enough clearance back there for the gauge back.

nattyboy: I really like that "replaced vent" idea, but I need that vent to warm my hands on co-old winter mornings when that aluminum shift knob freezes them! Where did you have that fabbed up and what did THAT cost? Is that a modified stock piece or a whole new one? Looks good.

Another cool way to go would be to modify the stock cubby under the radio - either as above (BTW, cool thing#1 and thing#2), or to artfully machine out the stock door and cubby, mounting the gauge on the left side and retaining the right side for sunglasses, whatever. That was my "plan B" but a spare instrument surround was much less expensive!

i really like the steering column idea. the one with velcro sounds easiest and cheaper than replacing the column itself. anyone do this? i do like the way it looks on my friend's wrx. very slick.

grrr, nattyboy you stole my idea. i helped a friend mount his profec b in his 240's center passenger vent this january too. looks like your gauge is very well molded.

Yep, two or three in a row under the radio. Later this year I'd like to have a boost and EGT and possibly an A/F or volt, etc. right there. The heck with losing a vent.

I was just about to order a dual full pillar with Boost and Oil Pressure, but now i'm thinking of just sticking with boost and a steering wheell pod.

My search button sucks and won't find my f_all right now, but there are more threads on this, and i think the steering wheel pod at protegeonline.com is a thin plastic and its not a perfect fit. otherwise i would have bought it when it first came out.

Does anyone have an quick opinion on the steering wheel? pics?

and not to jack but is oil pressure gauge necessary?

You guys know where to purchase that triple guage panel? A lot of people say you have to make it yourself, but i'm not quite handy in. Is there a company or a place to purchase one that would fit under our stereo?

the gauge is very nicely molded... and it better be for a one of a kind fiberglass piece that cost me $288 on top of the $130 i dropped on the aexi gauge

This is the place I ordered my gauge panel & boost gauge from. I'm also buying some LEDs to change the map lights & sidemarkers.

So how do you run the wiring if you put it in the slot under the radio? do you drill holes in the back or something?

II-Savy: is that a custom job? how'd you do it? looks slick as heckfire.

I got pod from www.protege5online.com (http://www.protege5online.com). Mitch is the guy there. It was a bit pricey but it look nice and almost stock. It also does not block anything. I also have a 15psi gauge which just seems normal to me considering the low boost we run.

02-20-2004, 03:19 PM
pretty spiffy! how much did it cost ya? how's the fit and quality of the pod? and can i have some details on your boost gauge (price, where you got it) ?

Some people hide there boost gauges so other people cant tell they run turbo. Does anyone have and methods for silencing the bov noise. Ive heard of running a tube from the bov to the exhaust so it is muffled when you shift.

I just put mine in today... single pod on the A-Pillar. Not sure I like it thought, couldn't quite get the exact match in color, plus I scuffed the edge up a little. I may just get the full A-Pillar dual pod, maybe call up mazda so they can give me the exact color. Only problem, not sure what other gauge to get... is it really necessary to know the temp of the oil? How about the A/F gauge?

alright, i like the idea of gauges under the radio. What about moving the radio to the lower spot? That does 2 things: 1) you eyes have to wander less to find your gauges, and 2) it moves the radio a touch lower so at night the bright flashing lights aren't as in your face. I've already moved my setup in prep for a triple gauge DIN... (attached is link to another thread with a pic of my interior (but no gauges)) http://www.msprotege.com/vbb230/showthread.php?t=52589

Dstickney: EGT? My 3 will be Boost/vacuum, EGT, and Oil Press. I'm also planning to "cut" out the ashtray and put volt & amperage down there...

hmm... since the car is pretty much stock right now, not sure I would need something like that. Hell, I could probably use an outside temp gauge. I wonder if Autometer makes them. lol

TiWing you can change the display so it's not flashing as much, I went with display B and it looks much classier IMHO, but then again I'm an old guy. Lower radio would be great, good suggestion. I'm off the the basement to fab up my gauge pod, stay tuned...

I have a dual guage piller pod thingy and I just used that really strong 3m double sided tape and it holds really well. I do have 2 small holes in the stock pillar ,but I figured if I ever needed to I could buy a new one for like $20 bucks.
