hey,
i was traveling to hunter valley today and on the freeway, i got pulled over by the police saying i was over the speed limit. I asked him to show me his radar or any numbers but he said he was doing a "speed check". Gave me a ticket and left off. damnit, so what the hell is a "speed check" ?

Actually I've heard that they don't have to show you their radar numbers anymore and it's kind of hard to use the inaccuracies of radar guns in your defense anymore. I don't know what a speed check is, but if I were to guess, I would say that maybe he just used some visual clue to your speed. I would be interested to what it actually said on the comments of your ticket. :(

Yeah, you should always fight tickets, even if it's just for the remote possibility that the cop doesn't show. Sometimes the judge will be lienent (sp?), especially if you're young or don't have prior tickets.

I notice that you are posting this in the Australia chapter, so what I've said might not apply.

Guys i was doing a bit of research and they are not allowed to fine you for a speed check as it is guess work thing. My cousin is in the police force and she said that speed checks are when the police or unmarked cop car sits about 5 to 10 meters away and keep thats distance to record a average speed that you are doing. NO TICKETS ALLOWED to be given. Thats here is wa anyway.

spicyhotpeas....well welcome to the forum! make sure you start a thread or something and tell us about yourself, and more importantly (hehehe) your car (mods etc). or just add into the aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi thread.

dont know what it's like in nsw, but there are always ways to get out of the ticket. like what davo said, the cop has to be certain what speed you were doing and has to be able to prove it. were they many other cars around? how far was the cop car from you? were you in the same lanes? corners? hills? we'll help ya out!

alrighty, i drive a mazda 3 sp23. no modifications at this point, still saving up for some... hehe.

ok, i was on the freeway in the most inner lane. my friend in his xr6 turbo was doing like 160 and i was trying to catch up to him, damnit, then the police appeared behind me flashing his lights and stuff at me.. this was like mid day so there were quite a few cars, and of course, everybody was exceeding the speed limit ! .......

i'd be inclinded to take it.

i had a cop chase me like that once b4. he said i was doing 80 in a 60 so i took that straight away. i was really doing 100+

if there were heaps of cars around you could say he picked the wrong car in court (hard in the day time though), at night time it would be much easier - much easier to confuse cars.

My mother got sprung by the same thing a little while ago when she was following traffic and was about 10-15 kays over a cop pulled her over and told her she had been doing 26 kays over the limit she tried to explain that she hadnt been speeding and said she had been keeping at the same speed as the rest of the traffic the cop wouldnt hear of it and wrote the ticket we think the only reason why mother was pulled was becasue she was driving a magna sports at the time and the rest of the traffic were driving old bombs.

That particular road is notorious for cop activity because they know that they can raise quite a bit of revenue from people driving along there doing a couple of kays over i dont condome speeding but this particular stretch of road should be more than 110 zone, as most drivers cruise along there doing 125-135 and the only accidents along there involve broken down cars or semi trailers tail gating cars it has been so long that i cant remeber when there has beena serious accident where speed is the cause.

Cops target nice cars and that is a thing that we have to watch, there is an additonal cost on top when we make our cars look good or buy good looking cars the attention that we attract from cops when we pass them. When i see a cop car or expect to see a cop car i always slow down 10 kays below the limit, nock the car in a high gear and watch my speed closly for a couple of kays because they will pounce as soon as they see a nice car.

I know police serve a purpose but it is anoying to hear stories like this about the cops being pain in the arse and picking up people for minor offences when there are more serious things to worry about like driver skills. i can live with some one being over the limit but i cant live with drivers who havent got a clue.

The thing that shits me about cops is the fact that when they are when both on and of duty the are bigger offenders than anyone else on the roads when it comes to speeding i personally know a couple of cops and every time i have been in the car with them i have seen them do 40-50 kays over the limit and i have heard stories of them doing burnouts or delibratleyspinning the car of and on duty

yeah i hate how cops target nice cars. imo my car is much safer travelling at even 20k's over the speed limit (not that i do that often) than a heap of sh!t, all rusted out, bald tyres with canvas showing, and 20 kids in the back seat....but will the cops pull over that car? no ofcourse not.

although i do admit not overly many cops look at my car because it's such a sleeper.

look i dont condome speeding but on this particular road 20 kays over the limit is not anything to write home about. I have been along that stetch of road with people who have 30 years driving experiance doing 40 kays over the limit and it felt perfectly safe

twilightprotege
05-17-2004, 06:02 AM
yeah it is a lot to do with experience, but i still strongly beleive more time and effort should be spent on getting dodgy old cars off the road than new sports cars

even though, i'd still feel safer in a newer car at 20k's over the speed limit than a heappa poo at the speed limit

this may sound irresponsible but i would feel more comfortable doing a 100 in a 50 zone my car than if i was doing 50 in a 50 zone in some i know's datsun 120y

i can understand that people have budgets but i can not stand death traps i was one in the datsun when it suddenly had to slam the brakes on it had more than 70 meters to slow down and eventually had to forced of the road in order not to hit the car in front in a recent motor bang for your bucks contest it took a mazda sp20 less than 40 meters to slow down from 100km-0kms

yeah that test was really good for the sp20 in braking and handling from memory

thats why i love the 323s they are an awsome car i have a couple of friends who are mechanics and they cant believe how well it accelarates brakes and corners not to mention they represnt great value for money and if you behave they are cheap on fuel for example i havent been all driving all that economically this week and have got 300kays out of half a tank my friend with a trx on a good week mite get 400 kays out of tank

Listen up tidy protégé. I think that you are getting a big head here. The police don’t target flashy cars because they look sporty and perform better than your average car. Most of the flashy cars they pull over are usually young drivers because as you know if you let a young person behind the wheel of a good car most of them are going to underestimate their abilities and kill someone whether it be their mates along for the ride or a family on holiday. What made me angry the most though about your posts was that you made fun of your friends’ datsun. By the sounds of things your friend sounds like a great driver, it doesn’t matter how good you car handles, or how quick it can stop. Your friends car sure it may be old and wasn’t able to stop in time but the most important part of that car being the driver had the ability to think quick and get out of the situation. I think that you should take your hat off to the driver and stop praising your car. I put it to you that I could beat you in a race even if I was driving and old datsun (upyours) . As for the rest of you (I'm not trying to offend you all) talking about speeding tickets, I’m a big offender when it comes to speeding, I speed every time I get in my car, hell I’ve had an old car up to 190 on a crapy old country road. Speeding is fun but it is also very dangerous there is a time and place for it and if you get caught accept that speeding ticket as a trophy for how fast you were going instead of whining and trying to get out of it, I know that if I ever get a ticket for speeding and it’s not a good one I’ll be asking the cop if I can do that again and make it better (headbang) .

Look i am not trying to get personal but that car should not be on the road because by it being on the road it is endangering others lives and we cannot commend some one for coming out top in a situation if its their stupid fault for being their in the first place

its like saying that if some one is travelling through a school zone excessively speeding and a kid walks out in front and the driver absolutly smashes the brakes and manages to just pull up in time we can not commend him we will see him as a dead set dickhead that was lucky so how can you commend someone driving an unroad worthy car and managing not to kill him self or others. A good driver has the perceptions to foresee an accident waiting to happen and do something about it. In my example this is not a demostration of skilled drving but someone being stupid but luck was on their side

how would you feel if this unroadworthy car had to suddenly pull up for a friend or family member. this is not a sign of a quality driver this is an example of someone being stupid with luck on their the first dumb thing this person did was turn the key in their car the second dumb thing was to drive it on public roads and the third dumb thing was not allowing a safe gap between him and the car in front this is especially dumb when they know the cars brakes are shit house.
I am fine with old cars on the just as long as they are safe and the people driving them have a slight clue on how to drive.
