Breeegz's Protege5 Rebuild Thread

Fully Built Short Block $1,900
Built & Ported/Polished Head $1,599
Head Gasket $119
Gasket Set (not including Head Gasket) $196
AWR Engine Mount Set (70 Durometer) $229
AWR Deep Sump Baffled Oil Pan $290
New Clutch + Lightweight Flywheel $624
Medieval Pulley Set (not including Crank Pulley) $269
Medieval Crank Pulley $160
Remanufactured Water Pump --Included in engine purchase
Alternator $200
Limited Slip Differential $700
Oil Pump --Included in engine purchase
DocB Oil System upgrade $300
Timing Belt $???
Thermostat $???
Head/Exhaust studs $??
Total = over $6,735

++ DD Beater Car $5300

I haven't decided on this price range yet, I could change my mind and go with the budget build later. I don't have my car here yet and am bearing down for a few month rebuild process. I'm more concerned with doing this right rather than a quick fix. I'm probably one of the few planning to keep my P5 long term (its paid off). If I get another car it'll probably be in addition to my P5 and after my wife pays off her 2007 Jeep Patriot (two car payments suck).

I'm working on the budget phase right now, am I missing anything besides labor? I'm looking for advice from the been there done that crowd, like other things you would consider to do while the engine is pulled from a 78,000 mile car.

Shit adds up fast..
(reserving spots for pics for during this process)

ooo oil pump, good idea..

boost later, get ready for boost now so I don't have to worry about building the engine later. I want to do this only once.

the only real issue with that is.. building the motor for boost now, you'll use low comp pistons.. so dding the car it will feel super effing slow.

That is an intense build but if you plan on keeping the car long term than it is a solid investment.

I would suggest spending the extra $50 for a new OEM water pump vs reman. though. I mean at over $8k what's another $50?

I haven't fully decided on the details, but that thought had crossed my mind. I was thinking about staying close to stock comp so I would have a decent driver until I get the boost... That might limit my boost options later, but I'll have an engine that'll handle 14-16psi right? I don't think I'll need any more than that. My goal is set for a modest 250 whp and be reliable, extra hp would be gravy. Nothings written in stone and I'm willing to hear peoples' opinions, just no flame wars please.

Point taken.. I was up late last night and the only water pump I could find online was reman... I wanted new, but reman was good enough for budgetary purposes.

yeah if you keep a 9:1 compression it'll be ok. ..and the boost will work w/ that comp too.

Uh...timing belt...also...if you are looking for an oil pump, just to give you a heads up they are on backorder from Mazda right now...I had quite a time tracking down a dealership that had one in stock, getting someone to pick it up, and shipping it to me...a lot of the dealers that Mazda shows as having them in stock don't...
