NHTSA place to file complaint about tire issue

Hello everyone, I would like to start off by saying hello to everyone on this forum as I just joined. Well I have been reading on many forums of the tire wear issue on the Mazda5 and I would like to share my experience also, I have a 2006 mazda5 that I bought new in June of 2006. Since then the car has only been driven a total of 22,000 miles. At 21,000 miles I had to replace the original Toyo tires because they were worn down to the cords on the inside of the rear tires, but the outside still looked like they could go another couple thousand miles and they had been rotated every 7,000 miles. Went to dealer to see if they would do anything about it and they told me to call Mazda USA about the problem because they could not do anything, so I called mazda usa and one of there reps told me that again they could do nothing about the problem, and to file a complaint to NHTSA because they are the ones who actually make the recalls on cars NOT Mazda. I filed a complaint yesterday on the NHTSA website and also saw that there have been about 6 or 7 complaints about the tire issue, but I guess its not enough complaints to start an investigation. I would just like to ask anyone else who has this problem to go to the NHTSA site and file a complaint so they can see thats its actually a major problem and start an investigation which will hopefully bring a recall that will fix the car.

Yea hopefully if enough people place a complaint they will see that its a big problem with the Mazda5

I rotate mine every 3000 miles. No issues. I add air to the rears when I anticipate a load of more tha 700 pounds. I learned this by owning 3 Saabs. Those Toyos suck. Go get some real tires and consider camber adjustment arms.

^^^^^See your thoughts are moD the car to get it right at our cost. Whereas most people aka those not on forums would rather this be solved at the factory see a difference yet?

1. Mazda506 Thanks for the link, bookmarked for use some day, I hope not.

I own a 06 Mazda Premacy here in Okinawa Japan, I'll keep an eye out for this issue on mine, I've got 1,000 worth of tires on mine, don't feel like buying 500 worth of tires once a year.

2. In the meantime why not do what AIMWO4 said and prevent MORE problems and maybe if there is a recall, Mazda will reimburse you for those expenses?

I know Pontiac did when I had spent money on a recall, then later they paid me back.

3. It would be nice to have the Mazda folks pay for this, but I'm going to do some prevention myself, going to get a sway bar soon. For up front, I think the FRONT is more at error in this case, just my .02 worth there.

(Note picture is example only, I'll have to order the real one at AUTOBACS)

4. I'm going to get a wheel alignment every other year on mine, however this Mazda Premacy is going to my daughter in 6 years. So I'm not so worried later down the road, but for now, yea, not going to get $500.00 worth of tread every year.

Thanks again, I'll make a complaint after a few more months time.

Everyone with the power steering failure should file a complaint too, no idea why there have not been a recall for it yet since this can actually cause a crash/death

I have to agree with you AIMWO4 right now thats the only way to fix it, but if we buy the car new, why should we spend more money to fix something that is a well know problem for the Mazda5? Shouldn't Mazda just make a recall to fix this issue for good?

SGT OKINAWA, I agree with you also I don't want to spend another 500 or however much on tires due to premature wear. And maybe if there is a recall the people that have bought that part will get reimbursed for the part.

Junr, my guess is that they want to see how many people have problems with that certain thing open an investigation and maybe make a recall, but isn't their a TSB now on the power steering failure now?

Unfortunately, I don't think Mazda will "fix" this. They will most likely make a recommendation such as I have done. I figure the information can help us in the meantime. This issue was never resolved by Saab for Saabs. It is a known fact that the rear alignment will lead to uneven wear. The set-up is more conducive to driving curved roads.

My Saab wagon actually had a tire pressure plate which recommended an increase in rear tire pressure if the load exceeded about 700 pounds. I don't think many people knew it was there.

On the other hand, I replaced an ignition cassette at my own cost (in the Saab). I was eventually reimbursed when they decided to recall it. It was a direct safety issue. If Mazda owners keep having trouble with the power steering, and report that... it will most likely be repaired under a recall.
