How To:"Flying M" and painted front emblem

Hey guys, i couldnt really find a good how to on this, and i looked really hard (one with pics and steps and all that fun stuff) and i decided id go out and do it today, so here we are.

What you need:

Sandpaper: I got 320 grit and 1500 grit

Spray Paint: I used Krylon Fusion (black) which was recomened by someone else on the forum

Fishing Line or kite string: I used kite string because i couldnt find fishing line in my garage

Bug & Tar Remover: Recomended by another forum member, worked great for debadging, so i used it to get rid of all the goo from the original badges

Card: credit card, licence, gift card, you get it
(pic needed?)

Clay bar:
Double Sided tape *strong*
Steps to get it done!!!

First, get all of your stuff together.

Here is what it looks like now.

Get your kite string of fishing line and slide it around the outside of the emblem and slide down, towards the ground, this will make the badge come unstuck.

Once finished all of that (while avoiding the pins, they are at the tops of the M, where the indents are) wiggle it around a bit and it will come off

Now we need to clean!
Spray your spray of choice and try to scrape everything off with your card.

Now it wont all come off right away so repeat it a few times, and wipe with a cloth.

When its done it wont look perfect, problably still an outline of the mazda logo

Now its time for your clay bar: Spray the detailing spray or whatever you use with yours, and rub, and rub, and rub, and then take a break so your arm doenst fall off, then rub some more and more, untill all the stuff is gone :nana:

HOW TO REMOVE THE FRONT EMBLEM!

First get a phillips head screw driver, then unscrew the grille.

The screws are the first ones from the inside. (if you look dead center at the top of the grille, move outwards untill you find a screw on each side, unscerw.

DO NOT PULL THE GRILLE ALL THE WAY OUT BECAUSE IT WILL NOT COME OUT!

just slide it up so you have enough room to work. look at the back of where the emblem is and you will see the clips that hold it in, i used a paperclip to unhook them and pop them out.

Now you need to start cutting, i brought it to my step dads dentist office to do the cutting, otherwise use a dremmel if you have one, and be patient while cutting, its pretty hard to explain where to cut it but they will all look different, the way YOU want them to look.

sand down your badge with the 320 first, get the entire thing, try to wipe it off first and then dont touch it again with your bare hands for the rest of the process. So sand the entire thing, the chrome will get lots of scratches, but its okay.

Then sand it with the 1500, this will make it smoother.

Lay out some newspaper on your grass, and spray away, remember quick even coats, wait a few mins before you do the next coat ( i did 3 in prob a half hr) most likley too quick but i was running out of sun and then it went away and i just wanted to get it done.

If you want you can do a clear coat, i think i am chosing not to do one,

(Flat)

(Clear)

Now for the hardest part, putting the tape on, you just need to cut it to make it fit inside the lines of the back of the embem, and then you need to peel off the backing. REAL PITA!

Then stick on, and ENJOY!

I would think that it has to do with appearance...?

Where can I find some good 3M doublesided tape? It seems that I can never find it anywhere. Also need some so I can do the HD lip.

I got it from lowes, not the exact stuff that was recomended, but it works pretty well for me, ive got the hd lip too, i had to go to 4 diffrent home depots and lowes's till i found the stuff, i called them all and everyone said they had it, turns out when i got there they didnt, i just got the high strength 3m tape, or you can get the high strength outdoor stuff, but its like 10 bucks a roll, if you plan on doing the lip on the front youl need 2 rolls regardless, youl have enough left over for the flying m, and if you wanna do any more youl need a nother 2 or 3 rolls.

autozone stocks it by the bunch...you can get it in not super wide rolls there for a good cost...idk if lowes offers the small width rolls or not

True, but if it's a how-to usually they're in the how-to section. I could be wrong, just throwing it out there, lol.
