2004 Mazda6 3.0L engine self destructs - Advice requested
My dear Mazda 6 bit the big one a little over a week when the engine decided to disintegrate, at only about 63K miles! Symptoms - car exhibits rod knock, diagnosis - bottom end failure.
This started with a foul noise while getting onto the highway (at probably about 5K RPM). After easing off, I noticed the Check Engine Light, and got off the highway. Then the Oil Light came on, so I pulled over and had it towed to my mechanic's shop. This is a 2004 6s - the 3.0L with manual tranny. It's been pretty well maintained with regular oil changes, and Redline MTL in the trans. The car was broken in very gently and has never been abused. It was certainly not driven as hard as my old 90 Civic Si, and I sold that off at 220K (I think it's currently doing duty with Hill Climbs). Only mod (if you can call it that) is a K&N filter. I'm trying to talk with Mazda now about getting this taken care of as a warranty item, though I haven't gotten very far with them yet. Has this happened to anyone you know? It's just too hard to comprehend an engine giving up the ghost like this at so few miles. Can anyone provide some advice on how to best deal with Mazda regarding covering this? And if they won't take care of me - any recommendation on how to proceed would be appreciated. Right now I'm considering used or rebuilt engines. Again, any advice would be appreciated. (I'm located in Northern NJ). Thanks, Dan Last edited by Dan__; 09-29-2009 at 03:47 PM. |

So Mazda said no, since I'm out of warranty. At least that was their initial response. Looks like I'll have to fight it harder.
Any advice on how best to do this? Thanks |

I doubt there is much that you can do since it's off of warranty. Maybe they can meet you halfway on costs - that would be the best case scenario.

Damn dude, never heard of a M6 S doing that!!! I had an 2004 6i with 95K miles with an AEM CAI and Magnaflow CBE and it rode like a champ until I sold it. You should definitely try to have them meet you half-way or call Mazda USA main offices for help. Just ask a dealer for their number.
