Clueless! Left Turn Signal = Downshifting?

I am at my wits end here folks. For about a month now when i put on my left turn signal, my car seems to downshift violently. the whole car shakes like i went from drive to first (Automatic) if im idling and i put on my left signal the car lurches forward. no check engine light. the signal works fine on the outside of the car. any ideas? thanks!

I would think that a short could cause that. or maybe even like too much voltage on a wire and its causing the tranny to act crazy.

Trace back your wires from the turn signal. Single out the ones for the left turn signal and keep going until you find something that is not normal, i.e. crossed wires, bare wires, etc...

Good luck m8! Wiring issues are a PITA! I have had several with my protege, although none nearly as bad as this. I still have a short somewhere in the wiring for my horn. Haven't felt like dealing with it. Only reason I really need it is to have a functioning alarm. Blinking lights only does so much, lol.

Check the ground for the turn signal (front and rear).

Remove the bulbs (front and back) and then see if it jumps. Measure the amperage.

I really suspect a floating ground issue or a maybe a bad ECU (since that is one of the few places where those two systems kinda' interface...

You better hope they've got some severe epilepsy in order to incapacitate them

If it is in manual mode when you do this does the dashboard display show it changing to a lower gear?

By idling, do you mean it was in Neutral? Or were you sitting in gear with your foot on the brake? Either way, if your left turn signal causes the car to lurch forward that is one dangerous car.

If you pull the turn signal fuse (not sure which one it is, but there must be one) does the problem go away? If so, great. Now that your car is slightly less lethal drive directly to a mechanic you trust and let them work on it.

Ya, my alarm is a new breed. Doesn't make noise to attract attention and deter thieves. It gives them seizures to incapacitate them.
