Post V6 engine?

I heard of the possibility of putting a late model Ford Probe V6 in our cars...is this do-able?

Yes, but it is not easy. Look over on the Protege tech page at:

actually here is a more direct link:

Why? Good way to lower the value of the MP3. Just playin, but are you really considering this?

It may be possible, but I don't think I would do it...

I own a Probe GT actually, and as I've mentioned before, I've had lots of problems with the car over the years. I autocrossed the car before, so that might contribute to a bit of wear, but let me see...

It was a daily driver, now with 177,000 kms on it. I never modded the engine itself, only intake, exhaust, ignition, and various small stuff. On the odd time I drove it pretty hard, but otherwise I'm no maniac and don't launch the car at every stop light or anything, and neither do I redline the car (I've done it a couple times over the years only...surprising?)...

'93 Probe GT, major repairs till now - engine gaskets blown twice (oil leaks), actually a third time as of now, I think...oil's coming through the sparkplug holes...distributor blown twice (damn pricey part), stock sparkplug wires frazzled, ECU problem, had to replace (stock one). Engine was replaced once, due to (I forgot) but something blown in the bottom end, causing oil to gush unknowingly during one trip, and fried the bottom end.

Minor repairs unrelated to the engine included too many things to mention, but stuff like the 2nd gear blew up after 5 years (OK that's sort of not too bad, but still...), oil gauge was never accurate, replaced 5 times (!!), 02 sensor replaced a couple times, timing belt snapped once (that was due to engine oil leaking on it and screwing up the belt's material), and various failures for emissions tests (after about 5 years of owning the car).

So, I'd be careful about putting in an old Probe engine into the MP3. Maybe I was one of those unlucky ones, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Then again, a fellow with an MX6 in another post claims there were no problems with his car, so who knows? All I'm saying is be careful...

My experince was just the opposite of MP3Ben. I got my MX-6 LX V6 in Jun of 92,and had few problems. It was my autocross car for five seasons and I taught both my children to drive in it. It will probably become my son's daily driver next year.

I agree with APEXistud about ruining an MP3. Now a regular ES is a differnet story.

Why is an ES a different story?

The ES is a different story because there are more than 1500 of them running around, IMO.

The ES is a different story because there are a lot of them. All the same bits should fit either car to do this conversion.

Hey. Well, firstly it wouldn't be an OLD v6 engine, it would be a new one. For now it's just something to consider, even though I'm more likely to go w/ a turbo. I like this car, but I just wanna give it some balls and a few minor non-performance upgrades (new sub, sunroof, etc). I'm just putting the idea here for discussion. Best case scenario, I get a V6 and turbocharge it. That would be baaaad.

Kooldino,
I like that little V6. I haven't had any problems with mine. I just would not put one in an MP3. If I were going to do that, I would start with an ES.

I don't really have an opinion on whether dropping a V6 would ruin the MP3 or not (because of it being limited), but I do agree it would be FAST with the V6 and a turbo!

As I said, there are varying experiences with that motor, and it just might be that I got the lemon of the bunch...

If it's a new motor, I'd say it's a helluva lot safer than an old one, that's for sure...or else some guy could sell you a motor like the one I still have in the Probe, and it'd be terrible hehe...I don't think my old Probe motor is in any condition to handle much of anything before it burst open and pistons came flying out LOL...

But yeah, do some research and figure if it's worthwhile and is still a viable option. Good luck!

Also remember that the Probe/MX-6 engine is one of the toughest engines to unlock HP on. SCC did an article on that a long time ago. Added a few bolt on's like exhaust and intake and only got like 2 HP hehe.

I would stick with the 4 banger in the MP3 now.

Is the probe engine the KL-ZE? The same engine out of the 626's?
