Speeding Ticket

Hey guys,

I just got a ticket in VA but i am a MD resident. The point system is slightly different between the two states. Does anyone know if the points transfer from VA to my MD license and if they do, is it a 1 VA point equals 1 MD point or what is it like? I have been ticket free for almost 2 years and now this BS. Sad day indeed. Thanks for your input.

i HOPE pts dont transfer because im looking at 6 VA pts. no clue how that transfers into MD points (if it does). According to VA DMV, the pts associated with the fine that i got sticks to your license for 11 years. but that is according to VA law and considering VA licenses. does that mean if pts transfer, then im looking at 11 years with 6 pts on my license?? that means i will have to sell my car and get a bicycle (i already have pts on my license). crazy times we live in. anyways, thnx for the reply and any other comments are greatly appriciated. thhx.

I'm not sure if it will.. some states do have cooperative systems that would transfer over points. and it would transfer over point for point... if you haven't had a ticket for 2 years, see if you can work out a deal with either the judge or the cop... you could get a break. good luck man

Can you call the DMV? http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/utilities/contact.asp
I searched for it on the web but couldn't find anything for you..

yes, points do transfer from state to state.. maybe not all states however.. it _used_ to be that they would just transfer from surrounding states, but now it's expanded.. for example: on a trip home from NOPI one year, my buddy got pulled over in south carolina.. rather than going back down to south carolina for the court date he just mailed in payment for the fine.. well he got 2 points against him from south carolina and they transferred here to MD. that was about 2 years ago, so the points are coming off his record finally (his insurance had gone up after the incident).

by the way, the term for transferring points from state to state is called "reciprocity" .. i.e., two states having reciprocity do transfer points from one to another..
