EMS solutions for the MSP

I hardly know anything about EMS, but I thought I'd try to organize this EMS bickering into something constructive. I think the only way to properly choose a tuning option is to compare them independently of the car they are installed in.

*EDIT: All of the names are now links to where each can be purchased.*

AEM EMS
Base Price: $1875
Extras Needed: ??
Laptop Compatible: Yes
Tuner: Beau @ MAM
Controllable Functions: Everything
Pros: Offers a complete standalone setup & does it very well
Cons: Very complex & very expensive
Final Word: Doesn't seem necessary unless you're building a Protege race car or you're a "Super Tuner"

Haltech E6x
Base Price: $1400
Extras Needed: ??
Laptop Compatible: Yes
Tuner: Juan @ HiBoost
Controllable Functions: Air/Fuel & Timing
Pros: Dependable
Cons: None
Final Word: Probably the best choice for Protege owners looking to make big #s & still be daily drivers.

Unichip
Base Price: $875
Extras Needed: ??
Laptop Compatible: No
Tuner: Unichip dealers/Corksport
Controllable Functions: Air/Fuel & Timing (manipulated)
Pros: good #s from current, limited tuning map
Cons: no user adjustability (must be sent to a Unichip dealer to reflash)
Final Word: Perfect for people looking for a "chip" upgrade that you can install & forget

MPI Tuner
Base Price: $750
Extras Needed: ??
Laptop Compatible: Yes
Controllable Functions: Air/Fuel, Timing
Tuner: MPNick @ Modern Performance
Pros: Very widely used, tradeable maps
Cons: Steep learning curve
Final Word: Good choice for experienced tuner

GReddy Emanage
Base Price: $289
Extras Needed: Injector Harness ($37), Ignition Harness ($39), Software ($114)
Laptop Compatible: No
Tuner: None
Controllable Functions: Air/Fuel
Pros: ??
Cons: Difficult to install & tweak, requires Profec E-01 ($509) for extra functions, no timing control
Final Word: Now that AFC is available, I don't see any point in buying this.

Airflow Logistics AFC
Base Price: $285 (GB)
Extras Needed: Boost Control (depends on method), FTC (significantly more $$)
Laptop Compatible: Yes
Tuner: DSMConvert/Airflow Logistics/Split Second
Controllable Functions: Air/Fuel
Pros: On the fly tuning via R4 software...simply hook up the laptop and adjust/tune as needed. Maps can be traded electronically (windows files)
Cons: No timing control
Final Word: Great option for those looking for cheap tuning while still yielding decent #s.

I can add more to this as I get more info or if anyone has suggestions.

Emanage can also do timing if you buy the timing harness. You'll also need an o2 signal modifier($100) regardless.

does upto four extra injetors, plus upto 12psi with only the stock injectors, does full timing control with boost retard has a built in O2 clamp.

The base system has made upto 240whp with stock injectors only. You should run extra injectors above 220whp.

I think Emanage needs to be corrected. You don't need the E01 to access the extra functions. In fact, you can access the most with a laptop. Also, you can control timing with 16x16 maps just like fuel delivery. It's much more powerful than a lot of people think.

Edit: You can trade maps with it, too.

Tuning software and a list of those who have the EMS would be a good addition. If you list those who have it (or are willing to be listed) it will give people the option to get help from each other.

AEM EMS
Base Price: $1875
Extras Needed: ??
Laptop Compatible: Yes
Tuner: Beau @ MAM
Controllable Functions: Everything
Pros: Offers a complete standalone setup & does it very well
Cons: Very complex & very expensive
Final Word: Doesn't seem necessary unless you're building a Protege race car or you're a "Super Tuner"

Haltech E6x
Base Price: $1400
Extras Needed: ??
Laptop Compatible: Yes
Tuner: Juan @ HiBoost
Controllable Functions: Air/Fuel & Timing
Pros: Dependable
Cons: None
Final Word: Probably the best choice for Protege owners looking to make big #s & still be daily drivers.

I totaly dis agree with the haltech vs aem.... aem is very user friendly and easier to tune then haltech.... no one wil give maps with the haltech because it is almost impossible to tune unless you've had experence. ive tried to get my friends civic to run on the haltech and we couldnt get it to idol. now he uses a Vortech fmu and a SAFC and puts 624 down on a b16. we gave up on haltech, aem is going in the protege and the civic soon.
